How the crowd perceives you, is the key to your success. If they don’t like what you offer, you are wasting your time. True, there might be the odd occasion that you end up in the wrong venue, but if this trend persists, you will have to go back to the drawing board.Have you ever been presented with a plate of food that contains great foods, but doesn’t come across as appetizing ? Yet you see a simple burger in a television advertisement, and it makes you hungry. It’s all about presentation. There are a few things to keep in mind:
Firstly, “get into it”. When the crowd perceives you as enjoying yourself, it will be easier for them to enjoy what you are offering. Regardless of whether it’s a joyful upbeat song, or a heartbreaking sad song, pour your passion into it. Take a good look at Michael Jackson’s old videos. Doesn’t matter if you like him or his music. He puts every bit of energy into every note – passion at it’s best. That’s what made him one of the most successful performers ever. What would his act have looked like without it ?
Secondly, get the sound right. Most of the time, people would like to hear the lyrics. You spend hours of practice, learning to adapt to the microphone as a medium, working hard at every sound coming out “just right”. All of which is of no use if nobody can hear you, or the sound is muffled. If feedback becomes a problem, rather drop the overall volume to attain balance again. If you are not doing the sound yourself, talk to the person who is doing it. As a performer, you have the right to decide what you want to sound like.
Thirdly, make sure you look the part. As a performer you are expected to “have an image”. This can range from simple, restrained style, to weird and wonderful, depending on the statement you want to make. Sometimes dressing up in complete contrast to what people would expect from you, is what makes them remember you. How you dress for the stage has nothing to do with fashion. The crowd dresses according to fashion. Make sure you stand out from the crowd.
