So you want to be a Nashville songwriter? Well let’s be realistic here, you are in for a long tough road. Do you have what it takes to get there? Do you have the successful mindset and thick skin you absolutely must have to make it in the music biz? Especially in the country music mecca of Nashville Tennessee, where competition is fierce and dirty! So many songwriter’s and artists think that just moving to Nashville will open up the doors to their dreams. Sorry my friend, it unfortunately takes a bit more than that. I am not just talking talent either. Talented Nashville songwriters are a dime a dozen. Besides being talented, you must be unique, and possess the ability to stand out from the crowd. On top of that, you must have the ability, or hire someone with the ability, to really promote you and your music.
On that note, here are a few tips you should absorb, if you are really determined to become a Nashville songwriter.
Tip One: Do not, absolutely DO NOT move to Nashville until you have established yourself, and made a name for yourself in your own hometown. Try to put yourself out there as much as possible, as this will help you aquire poise and presence.
Tip Two: Find a group of like minded musicians and/or singers. Hang out, network, learn an extra instrument or two. This will help you in the long run as Nashville songwriters are much more likely to succeed in their endeavors when they play an instrument and sing as well. That is considered a triple threat to many record labels, and if you can become one, you will be well on your way.
Tip Three: Learn your craft. Songwriting is a craft that can be learned by anyone, it doesn’t just take talent. The ones who tend to make it, aren’t necessarily the best writers. They are more like the best “rewriters”.
Rewriters are those musicians who are ready and willing to tweak, rearrange, and essentially change their original songs to make them more marketable.
Tip Four: Make sure that once you are established locally, you create and build your fanbase.
Once in Nashville, unfortunately you will have to face rejection probably several times over in your quest to become a Nashville songwriter. However, if you learn your craft and make yourself a very well rounded arist and if you stay strong and perservere, you can succeed. You just really have to want it bad enough! That is secret, wanting it bad enough to put in your time and do whatever it takes.
Following your dreams takes guts. Do you have what it takes? Do you know where you are going and how you are going to get there? Find yourself at Lyrical Content.
